HDR technique simulation used to brighten a dark (but not underexposed) photo

"As you can see, the dark areas in this photograph are very dark; the detail on the black carpet cannot be seen and the black is reflecting into the bottom of the silver dresser. The ceiling looks dark and dreary. When I lighten the photo, the whites begin to look overexposed, and the silver furniture does not help the situation. This is not an underexposed photo. Can you help with brightening the photo?"
